Bryan Anoruo: The Autodidactic Image of Motion Design.
Meet Bryan Anoruo, Founder SpencerZill, Multiple Award Winning Creative Motion Designer, CG & VFX Artist.
Nigeria’s design industry is home to a self-taught, empathetic motion designer, Bryan Anoruo. The energetic 25-year-old designer paid his dues before starting SpencerZill, a creative advertising company and GoMotionng, a motion design community to empower Nigerians and African motion designers.
Previously, Bryan worked with Cregital and it was one of the best things that happened to his growth as a motion designer. Thereafter, he worked with Deviant Marcus, an advertising agency in which he spearheaded the creation of campaign materials and animations for clients. Bryan, no doubt, knows his onions. Besides overseeing the affairs of SpencerZill and GoMotion, he also works as a Senior Motion Design, CG & Visual Effects Consultant at Viacom International Media Networks Africa, MTVBase Africa, Nickelodeon and RedBoxAfrica.
At 17, Bryan’s passion for design was first ignited. He derived fun in adding glows to pictures he took of himself and his mum. His lifelong enthusiasm for blockbusters like Odyssey induced his curiosity about the thrill of visual effects. Fascinated by the creatures, adventures, stories and effects in the movies, Bryan got his first laptop which enabled him to surf the internet and discover the limitless world of design.
Bryan Anoruo obtained his first degree in Computer Technology at Babcock University. He is currently on his Master’s degree program in Advanced Visual Effect in London. He believes the Nigerian designer will better proficient by either learning online with constant practice or studying outside the country to gain access and exposure to better facilities and tools.
Design, to Bryan, is a tool for empathy and compassion and to deliver user-centred solutions. He believes that accepting the difficulty that comes with progress and leveraging that to create experiences through design, is priceless.
The most difficult part of his design process is getting the ball rolling on an idea and then solidifying it for the next steps. Although, the concept or idea is usually laid out already when he is working on pretty simple projects, in really complex works he takes notes and drafts sketches when ideas come to his mind. He derives fun from the tedious progression from the concept phase, where all the pre-production happens, gathering inspiration and references, sketching storyboards, writing shot lists, and exploring techniques. After this concept stage is locked in, he proceeds to the development stage and then the animation stage with animatics, and finally, the fleshed-out animation edit and hi-res rendering.
Through his career in advertising, Bryan has learnt to let go of things he loves, to develop an increasingly thick skin and to see things for what they are and not what he wishes them to be. Over the years, he’s had great opportunities to work on several amazing projects for Comedy Central, Glo, DSTV, MTV, Nickelodeon, Viacom, Hyundai, SoundCity, 9mobile as well as product commercial VFX and motion design for movies and TV Broadcast.
With a specialty in motion design, CG and visual effects, Bryan has earned for himself recognition, winning the bronze award for best design without footage at 2019 Promax Global Award and Best CG Animation at the 2018 Promax Global Award.
In a challenging sphere of trying to keep up with the rapidly changing technology and techniques, Bryan gets inspired to create designs that will alter people’s perspective and resonate with every generation. He believes the future of design is in motion and that the country will be where it’s going to be via the creative industry.
Overtime, Bryan has been greatly influenced and inspired in the design world by artists like Andrew Kramer, Andrew Lebrov and Elon Musk and presently, he inspires upcoming designers whom he advises to understand the principles of design and animation which supersedes trends. He recommends articles, podcasts and write-ups on motiongrapher.com and medium as inspirational contents and tips.
Bryan and his team at SpencerZill continue to break stereotypes and fearlessly challenge the status quo. In a thoroughly divided world, Bryan Anoruo is committed to bringing people together through compelling stories that defy impossibilities.
